In an article posted on Townhall.com and entitled “Why Is the Left Always So Deathly Afraid?” Stephen Moore points out that during the COVID pandemic, 70% of Democrats described themselves as being “very worried” about the coronavirus while only 30% of Republicans responded that way.  Blue states imposed strict mask mandates, shut down schools and businesses, and kept them shut down while Red states opened far more quickly, or, as in the case of South Dakota, for example, never shut down at all. Even today, you see people wearing masks here and there, outdoors as well as in, and you can almost guarantee that they are Democrats.  Republicans, by and large, are back to normal, viewing COVID like the flu, as just something to live with.

It has always been some catastrophe with the Democrats:  Overpopulation was going to destroy the world and we would all starve to death!  Then in the 1970’s when we saw several years of severe winters with heavy snows and even a blizzard in Edgar County, Illinois, a number of scientists argued we were watching an ice age being ushered in.  Then, of course, when that didn’t happen, global warming became the new crisis until more savage winters and the refusal of Al Gore’s Polar bears to become extinct changed the crisis to “Climate Change.”

Climate change still means “global warming,” but this way ALL extreme weather, drought in the west and floods in the east at the same time can be blamed upon climate change.  It is accused of bringing us more and worse hurricanes, although there have been zero, zero hurricanes in August this year, one of the peak hurricane months.  But never fear, Liberal Democrats are still afraid!  They BELIEVE in their fear, their catastrophe!  It will come!  They are confident.

That is why, in a time when this country has been over-run by nearly 4 million illegal aliens from all over the world bringing with them disease, poverty, drugs, violence and death; in a time when our allies no longer respect us and our enemies no longer fear us; in a time when inflation is making it hard for the average family to make ends meet each month and some are having to choose between doctors’ visits and medicine or food on the table; in a time when the president* of the United States has just denounced nearly 75 million Americans who voted for his opponent in the last election (nearly two years ago) as semi-fascists, lovers of violence, chaos, and dangers to the country; in this milieu, Liberals and the president* will tell you that the worst danger to the country at this moment is Climate Change. Paranoia.

Why do they fear?  Why do they always have this need to find something, anything to fear?  Moore suggests that as long as there is something to fear, there is a need for big government to step in and save them.  And since Liberals love the idea of government taking care of them, they need to find a reason to bring the government in.  He also says that the Left is fatalistic.  The Right, on the other hand is Optimistic.  The Left says, “Oh, no, we’re going to die!”  and the Right says, “Okay, we can handle this, let’s get to work and find a solution!”  The difference, he concludes, is between cursing the darkness and lighting a candle.

I love that analogy for more than one reason.  Lighting a candle rather than cursing the darkness does, in fact, sum up the traditional American spirit of “I can do it!”  The same spirit that helped our ancestors carve farms out of the wilderness and make homes out of logs cabins.  The spirit that infected those brave men and women who wrested the thirteen colonies out of the hands of the most powerful country in the world and declared it to be a free and independent nation.  Sure, there were Tories, the Liberals of the day who relied on the British to take care of them, but they were outnumbered by the American Patriots who desired freedom, who lit that candle in the darkness, and in so doing, created the freest, most wonderful country in the world.

But lighting that candle is also reminiscent of the words of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount, when he said to the people,  “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven,” (Matthew 5:14-16 nkjv).

Unlike the Left and Liberal Democrats, most Republicans, that is to say, most of those on the Right, are Christians.  We have a deep and abiding faith in God.  We didn’t fear COVID because we trusted God to protect us and we knew that even if it were His will that we died, we knew we were Heaven bound.  We are admonished over and over in the Bible not to fear because God is our protector.  And so, we pray, and we feel peace. And we light our candle and let it shine.

With God, there is nothing to fear!
