In 1960 a blockbuster novel by Harper Lee entitled To Kill a Mockingbird which has become a classic that is still taught in many high school English classes was published.  The story, told from the viewpoint of Scout Finch, the young daughter of Maycomb, Alabama lawyer Atticus Finch, spans three years in the 1930s and revolves around the accused rape and beating of a poor white girl named Mayella Ewell.  The accused is Tom Robinson, a young black man with a damaged arm that had been caught in a cotton gin when he was 12.  In the trial, Atticus proves that Mayella is lying and that Tom could not physically have assaulted her as she claimed, but Tom was a black man and Mayella a white woman and so the jury of 12 white men convicted him anyway.  Tom was later shot to death trying to escape prison before being hung.

Although the plot of this novel is compelling in its obvious miscarriage of justice, it was not a simple figment of Lee’s imagination.  Instead it mirrored an event which had occurred when she was herself a child, an event that was all too common in the south of the 1930s. The South of post-reconstruction days was a South that accepted the freedom of slaves because it had to, but which demeaned and “kept those ‘n*****s’ in their place.”  There were black churches, black schools, black water fountains, black waiting rooms that kept the former slaves and their descendants from mixing with their white “betters.”  The Ku Klux Klan, which for all purposes was the enforcement arm of the Democratic Party, dressed in their white robes and hoods, burning crosses on the front lawns of uppity black families, and lynching without benefit of judge or jury, any man accused of rape or even of looking at a white woman.  By the 1960s, when Lee’s book was published, blacks in the South had begun to fight for the equality promised to them under the Constitution, and scores of idealistic white college students flocked to the South to march with them in the streets of cities like Birmingham and Selma.  Some of the white students, boys and girls alike, were murdered for being “n****r lovers.”

The Democratic Party, it seems, has returned to its roots.  Oh they haven’t resorted to murder yet, but not for want of trying.  A Bernie Sanders supporter, James Hodgkinson, tracked down a ball field where Republican members of Congress were practicing for a Congressional baseball game and opened fire. Senate Majority Whip Steve Scalise was seriously wounded as were four others including Scalise’s two capital police body guards, who, although wounded, shot and killed the attacker.  Had Scalise and his security team not been there, the other Republicans would have been sitting ducks.

Senator Rand Paul was attacked by his liberal neighbor as he got off his lawn mower and ended up in the hospital with five broken ribs and bruised lungs.

Farzad Fazeli attacked GOP congressional candidate Rudy Peters at the Castro Valley Fall Festival (California).  Luckily Peters was able to grab a campaign sign and defend himself against the knife until help could arrive.

Left wing mobs physically attacked the founder of the Minuteman border patrol group at Columbia University.

In August of 2016,  anti-Trump protesters attacked, pushed, spit on and verbally harassed attendees, beating an elderly man and forcing  the others to walk a “gauntlet” or attackers as they left a Trump fundraiser in Minneapolis,

In the same year, a Tennessee man was assaulted at a garage sale because he was a Trump supporter, and another Trump supporter in New Jersey was attacked with a crowbar on the street.

In September of that year, a Trump supporter was beaten up by protesters in El Cajon, California.

In October a GOP office in North Carolina was spray painted with “Nazi Republicans get out of town or else” and then fire bombed.

In November, a high school student wrote on social media that she supported Trump. An attacker tore off her glasses and punched her in the face.

Immediately following the election, the president of Cornell University’s College Republicans was assaulted and students protesting Trump punched and kicked a Maryland high school student for wearing a Make America Great Again hat.

Authorities arrested a high school student in Florida for punching a classmate carrying a Trump sign.

A group of black men in Chicago attacked a white man while calling insults against Trump.

Maryland high school students punched a student supporting Trump and then kicked him while he was on the ground.

A high school student in California yelled at a girl “You support Trump. You hate Mexicans,” before viciously beating her.

An elementary student in Texas was beaten for voting for Trump in a mock election.

A 74 year old man was knocked to the ground, hitting his head on the curb, by a black lives matter support outside of Trump Towers after the election.

Two men punched and kicked a Connecticut man who was simply standing holding an American flag and a Trump sign,.

In December, a Trump supporter was beaten and dragged by a car.

In January of 2017 one Trump supporter was knocked unconscious after airport demonstrators beat him repeatedly on the head.

Another Trump supporter was attacked after putting out a fire started by anti-Trump mobs.

In February of 2017 California GOP Rep Tom McClintock had to be escorted to his car after a town hall meeting because of angry protestors who slashed the tires on at least four cars.

A 71-year-old female staffer for California GOP Rep. Dana Rohrabacher was knocked unconscious during a protest outside the representative’s office.

And the the attacks have only gotten worse and more frequent.

The Daily Caller has compiled a list of these attacks and reports are that they range well above 300, and those are just the ones that have been reported. Republican members of Congress and members of the Trump Administration have been hounded out of restaurants, have had mobs parked on their front lawns chanting obscenities, and have had numerous death threats made to themselves, their families, and their staffs.  B- actor Peter Fonda made numerous vile tweets about Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders and her family and then tweeted that the President’s young son, Barron, should be locked in a cage with pedophiles.

All of this is truly horrible, but the icing on the cake has been the actions of the Democrats to the nomination of a strict Constitutionalist to the Supreme Court.  Worried lest their precious Roe v. Wade decision should be overturned and send the determination of whether and when to allow abortions back to individual states, the Democrats have gone crazy.  Outside of the confirmation hearing Democratic operatives were handing out cash to individuals, telling them to go into the hearing chamber gallery and shout and scream in order to disrupt the proceedings. Democratic Senators themselves abandoned any pretense of decorum in order to interrupt both Judge Kavanaugh and their Republican counterparts as they attempted to speak.  On the first day alone, they interrupted over 30 times.

Then, when it appeared that Brett Kavanaugh’s credentials, background, legal decisions, and character were unassailable, Sen. Dianne Feinstein revealed a letter from a California professor who charged that Brett Kavanaugh had attempted (in her estimation) to rape her 36 years ago when she was 15 and he was 17.  The charges were explosive and immediately stopped the vote to send Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the full senate while the Judiciary Committee investigated the allegations.  There followed a series of offers from Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley to the accuser, Dr. Blasey Ford, to interview her in public, in private, and in California if she chose through a series of 9 unanswered emails and 2 unanswered voice mails before her attorney finally began to dictate terms.  The hearing was set for Monday, but Dr. Ford, who flies regularly on vacation including to Fiji, couldn’t be in Washington by Monday because of her fear of flying.  Grassley obligingly moved the hearing to Wednesday.  No, Wednesday wouldn’t work.  So the meeting was moved to Thursday.  A bunch of white men shouldn’t be questioning her, the liberal media complained, so Grassley hired a woman prosecutor from Arizona.  A woman questioning her would demean her, objected another liberal news outlet.

Over the weekend, Democrats, feared that their ploy with Dr. Ford might not work in the face of the 65 women who had attended high school with him who claimed he would never have done something like Dr. Ford accused and the over a hundred women who had worked with him or clerked for him who also attested to his respectful treatment of women. So they began searching nearby high schools, trying to find someone, anyone who might have a similar story.  They found a woman who remembered having a boy expose himself to her, but was too drunk at the time to remember who it was, at least until after she had consulted with a Democratic lawyer.  Then she remembered that it had been Brett Kavanaugh.  The New York Times refused to run the story after questioning dozens of her classmates and finding no supporting evidence.  A third and fourth accusation also emerged, one with no details including the supposed victim’s name, and the other with a story so outrageously ridiculous that no one could take it seriously, except Democrats, of course.  That story was that a young lady who was in college had attended parties with high school students when Kavanaugh would have been about 15 where Kavanaugh and his friend Mark Judge had organized gang rapes where the boys lined up to have sex with the victims.  The accuser claimed to have been one of the victims, but also said she had attended about ten of these  parties. Huh?

In the meantime, all three of the individuals that Dr. Ford had said were present at her attack gave sworn statements that the incident had never occurred.  Ford’s longtime friend said she had never even met Brett Kavanaugh, much less ever attended a party with him with or without Dr. Ford.  At the hearing, Dr. Ford, sadly explained that her friend’s health problems no doubt made it difficult for her to remember what had happened.

The hearing provided no evidence.  We have only the word on Dr. Ford against the word of everyone she said would back up her story but who did not. But Democrats are adamant.  She must be believed.  The liberal woman (Dr. Ford is anti-Trump and a Bernie Sanders supporter) must be believed even when the evidence says she is mistaken because the accused is a conservative man.

So the Democrats have come full circle.  Then they lynched black men at the simple accusation of a white woman.  Now they metaphorically lynch conservative men at the simple unproven accusation of a liberal woman. They shut down the speech of anyone who disagrees with them.  They ignore truth if it does not advance their political agenda.  At yesterday’s hearing, Senator Lyndsey Graham angrily accused his Democratic colleagues of ruining an innocent man’s life in order to advance their lust for power and he was right.  They exploited a vulnerable woman who suffered a traumatizing event but has somehow, we don’t know how because no one asked her, misidentified her attacker, and they ruined the life of an innocent and honorable man, who even if he is confirmed, as I fervently hope he will be, will bear the scars of this ordeal forever as will his wife and his two young daughters.

Graham told Republicans “If you vote no, you’re legitimizing the most despicable thing I have seen in my time in politics.”  And he told his Democratic colleagues,  “Boy, y’all want power and I hope you don’t get it!” The more power the Democrats get, the more physical and verbal assaults we will see on conservatives, the more freedoms we will lose, the less America will be the “Shining City on the Hill.”  We must, absolutely must, not allow people who act in such an immoral and despicable way to control our country.  Republicans in Congress have not proven themselves to be as good as we had hoped, but they are sure far better than the alternative!  Vote  in November, and vote for a brighter future.  Vote Republican. It is, after all, your only sane choice.
