Many years ago, more than I want to calculate, I was taught how to type.  That was using a manual typewriter, that’s how long ago, for those things are now antiques!

Our teacher was a Mrs. Harmon, and one of the first things we had to do was to use all ten of our fingers and thumbs.  To do that, a simple sentence was given to us to practice, which did just that.  If my memory is correct, here is what it said:

“Now is the time for all men to come to the aid of their party.”

I was not the fastest typists in the class — that honor belonged to Kay, who, as all of us knew, even when we were freshmen in High School, would become an elementary school teacher.  She did!

But learn to type we did and now with computers that is a skill that comes in handy.  That one sentence sticks with me, for we had to type it over and over until we were sick of it.  But we learned to use our entire hands on the keyboard.

In this post, we shall use that phrase to show that all good Americans need to wake up (not as woke) and get with it when it comes to our lives, both individual and corporate, in order to make our society what God intends it to be.

Now is the time to come to the aid of our families.  We need to step up and do those things which makes the building blocks of society strong, stable and effective for those who are part of each family.  Father, mother and children all have a role to play in this, and it is our duty to not only fulfil our parts, but to teach our children what fathers and mothers should be doing so they can pass that on to their children.  Love, sharing, helping — come to the aid of the family, and society will benefit.

Now is the time to come to the aid of our churches.  One of the strengths of this nation is its faith in God, many times exhibited through the places of worship found in its towns and cities.  Each of us who are members of a located church need to find what it is we can do to strengthen Christ’s body, volunteer for that job and complete whatever task it is to the best of our abilities.  By so doing, we make the church stronger, and make it a better member of our community. Here in our home town, we see an abundance of churches, most operating at far less than capacity.  Now is the time to come to our churches’ aid!

Now is the time to come to the aid of our communities.  In each of our places of residence, there are organizations which take the work of many individuals in order to make the town in which we live one that is attractive to potential citizens and one that makes life better for those who have lived there for years.  Included in this category of aid would be the school system.  Since most children attend the public schools, there are many opportunities to help.  First, and foremost, the school board needs our attention.  Vote each time members come up for election.  Select the best people, those who are honest and have the welfare of the students and their parents at heart.  This might include showing up at school board meetings and voicing our opinions about the schools and the curriculum taught.

Volunteers are needed in the school, also.  Those who offer to help in the classroom, work with the programs each school has and even volunteer for the sports teams will be invaluable aids in the progress our students make.  Education is one of the key ingredients of a child’s success later in life, and when we make our presence known it enhances that education.  Any such help also reinforces the importance of an education in our children as they see us taking an active part in the school system.

Now is the time to come to the aid of our communities’ civic organizations and outreach to the disadvantaged.  Here in our home town, many such organizations abound.  There are the Shriners, the Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis, Knights of Columbus, the American Legion for vets, as well as the VFW.  We have Choices for help with pregnancies, a Compassionate Clothing Closet, Shop with a Cop at Christmas, the help for the homeless and others almost too numerous to list — each of these needs volunteers and funds to exist.

Now is the time to come to the aid of our nation.  We are at a time of peril as a free and powerful nation.  Events have occurred that have reduced our footprint on the world, and we need to become as active as we can.  Included are several strategies to take.  Of course, voting is one action we all should take.  In local, state, and federal elections we should make our opinions known through the ballot box.  We must never miss the primary and general elections, and become knowledgeable about the various referendum questions.

When election time rolls around, we must inform ourselves about the candidates and issues, making sure our votes align with what we believe, and not follow the most popular or best-spoken people who ask for our support.  Being involved might also entail financial support for political parties and/or issues that arise.

Our preferred candidate, party or issue may not prevail, but now is the time to come to the aid of our nation.  We do that in our family, our town, our state and our federal government.  If all Americans become active, our republic will live for many more years.
