Today’s blog is composed of just three or four (depending on my brain stamina) snippets from the news, which show the bankruptcy of the Democrats and the Left.
Finally, it is good to know we have a President who will stand on principle when negotiating with our enemies. President Trump was to have a “summit” with the Taliban and the Afghan government today at the Presidential retreat, Camp David, located in the Maryland mountains.
But he called it off! In Afghanistan, Taliban fighters killed twelve in an attack, including an American soldier. Trump called them on it and canceled the secret meeting which was to try to negotiate an end to American involvement in the 18-year-old conflict in that woebegotten nation.
Criticism of the proposed meeting came from both sides of the political aisle. Usually the reasoning was that we do not negotiate with terrorists. And Trump got the harshest treatment for his effort to do so, in spite of the fact that such dealings with the Taliban had begun in 2013 under President Obama.
But even though such terrorists are repugnant to Americans, what options do we have in Afghanistan? Rational thinking reduced such different approaches to just four. 1) Continue as we have been doing for 18 years, suffering the deaths and drain on our treasury we have for those almost two decades. 2) Go all out to defeat the Taliban by unleashing our mighty military, which would cause more of our military personnel to die, and would include a high rate of civilian death. 3) Negotiate with the enemy, even though it is not very palatable, and we might not get all we want. 4) Leave the country to its own devices, which would probably send that nation spirally down into further anarchy.
Public opinion would reject options 1, 2 and 4. That leaves only negotiation as a viable choice. If those two entities really want to end out involvement, we might see some movement toward detente, even if we did not achieve what would be called victory.
But at least an American President acted decisively, something we haven’t seen since Teddy Roosevelt’s State Department sent the telegram, “This Government wants Pedicaris alive or Raisuli dead.” With this gauntlet thrown down, the Greek-American kidnap victim in Morocco was returned to safety. For refusing to negotiate with those who kill an American soldier just before the meeting to put pressure on the U. S., we say “Bravo, Donald Trump!
For some time now the Democrats (and some Republicans) have been claiming that global warming was going to destroy life in a little over a decade. The clown car that holds the 2020 Democrat Presidential hopefuls decided that this would be a winning issue in next year’s election, so with the helpful hands of CNN a seven-hour townhall was held last week, giving each of the ten candidates an opportunity to explain how he or she would combat the threat to our way of life. Mostly, this exercise was futile; CNN’s ratings fell below the Hallmark Channel (and probably the fishing channel!), and those who managed to watch more than a few minutes were bored to tears.
“Sharpie-gate” showed that Trump Derangement Syndrome has not been cured. Hurricane Dorian was bearing down on the United States, and for two weeks dire predictions were pronounced about how devastating it would be, perhaps equaling Hurricane Sandy in 2012. President Trump got into the act, delaying a planned trip to Poland to stay focused on the safety of American citizens. One day before the storm hit, he used a map which had a hand drawn prediction that the hurricane would possibly hit Alabama. When Dorian thankfully only glanced off Florida and the Southeast coast, anti-Trump pundits pounced, competing with each other to show just how out of it the President was. However, the “official” hurricane forecasting apparatus had originally showed the track of Dorian to possibly hit Alabama, and even CNN had used that in one of its earlier broadcasts. State officials in Alabama had mobilized their National Guard to be ready for Dorian. Yet The Washington Post even sent one of its reporters to Alabama to report on the non devastation of the storm.
Each of these have been reported on at length by conservative web sites and commentators. But by highlighting them once again, perhaps we can become more convinced than ever that handing over the reins of government to this set of politicians and sycophants in 2021 would be an act of insanity on the part of the electorate.
