What delicious irony! President Trump fired FBI Director James Comey on Tuesday, and the Democrats are coming unglued. Chuck Schumer, Senate Minority Leader, held a press conference to denounce the action, almost elevating Comey to sainted icon. The next day, he went on the Senate floor to continue his tirade against the President for such an unprecedented action, hinting at a Watergate level cover-up.
He was not the only Democrat to weigh in on the firing. House Minority leader Nancy Pelosi added her two cents worth (excuse me, she is too rich to be limited to that paltry a sum)! Something nefarious must be going on if you believe the statements of these two Democratic leaders and others of their party.
The irony is that before Tuesday, their mantra was that Comey must be fired because of his actions in investigating former Secretary of State and Democratic candidate for the Presidency, Hillary Clinton, in 2016 for sending insecure emails of sensitive and secret documents on a personal server. Here is a short list of some high level Democrats who have howled for Comey’s scalp in the recent past.
Chuck Schumer
Nancy Pelosi
Harry Reid
Maxine Waters
Hank Johnson
Steve Cohen
Those last three are Democratic Representatives who felt that Comey had lost the ability to run the bureau, and felt he should be fired or should resign. The Democratic National Committee claimed the Director should be out of his job. Many Dems felt Comey had tilted the election against the anointed one, Hillary, and thus should merit immediate dismissal. Hillary herself blames Comey, in part, for her defeat at the polls last November.
Why the switch since they finally got what they wanted? Simply that their hatred of the President trumps (pun intended) any sense of irony or hypocrisy in their change of position.
But many in the red states, even if they are mystified by the timing of this reduction in force in the FBI, applaud the actions of the President. After suffering under the Obama administration’s lack of backbone in taking action against those who fail to do their jobs, it is a refreshing change.
The Veterans’ Administration — after iron-clad proof that veterans were being denied timely and proper care, and President Obama’s “outrage,” how many high-level officials were terminated? Remember the IRS scandal, where officials there targeted conservative organizations who dared apply for tax-exempt status as non-profits? The two who were either complicit or were in charge never felt the axman’s blade for their actions. Lois Lerner was allowed to retire with a pension which should be the envy of any worker. And her boss, John Koskinen, still runs the agency. But no one, even in the face of irrefutable proof of wrongdoing, was fired.
Yet look at how President Trump has operated. Coming from a business background, he realizes that underperforming employees should either shape up or he must ship them out. In just three and a half months in office, this is his list of terminated “employees.” Michael Flynn, appointed as national security advisor to the President, when it was learned that he had deliberately misled Vice President Pence about his contacts with Russian officials, was shown the door. In another case of firing that caused a Democratic meltdown, Sally Yates, Acting Attorney General, refused to do her job in carrying out duties, was dismissed by President Trump. Before Comey was abruptly terminated, Steve Bannon, controversial advisor to Trump, was quietly dismissed from his previously high position.
Then came Comey’s Waterloo. But what many inside the beltway and those on the coasts do not realize is that what the country needs is a leader who is not afraid to make the tough decisions and accept the consequences. I am not in favor of all that the President says or does. He lacks the instincts of a politician (which in many people’s eyes is a strength) and sometimes his tweets and his words get in the way of what he wants. But at last we have a President who will take action when needed.
